Amethyst Resort -Pasikudah

General Overview

Amethyst Resort was one of the first hotels to open on Pasikudah Bay and offers simple but well-furnished accommodation, international cuisine, an extensive beach frontage and a laidback feel. This single-storey resort is set on acres of gardens with a lagoon that runs through the centre of the property. The lobby, restaurant and bar is housed in the front of the property while the swimming pool and bedrooms are located across the lagoon and reached via a bridge. The lagoon lined with mangroves, attracts numerous birds. The resort is designed with saffron colored walls and green roofs that blend into the greenery. Bedrooms are set in four separate wings and have lagoon or sea views. The shimmering seas of Pasikudah Bay are ideal for swimming and watersports during the season from about March to September.


There are 40 Standard Rooms and one Suite all with private terraces opening on to lagoon or sea views. Red Dot recommends the sea view Standard Rooms and the Suite which has direct access to the beach. Rooms are furnished with king-size or twin beds. In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, satellite TV, iPod dock, wifi internet, mini-bar, tea/coffee facility, and ensuite bathrooms with h/w shower. The Suite is spacious and has a separate ensuite bedroom and a living room which can be converted into a second bedroom upon request.

The Taprobane restaurant offers traditional Sri Lankan and international cuisine buffet style or a la carte. Seafood such as crab, prawns and fish is a specialty here. The a/c Barrel Bar with a pub ambience serves up a range of alcoholic beverages and also has a pool table and a large TV screen for enjoying cricket and rugby matches. Fresh juices and cocktails are served by the poolside. Other hotel facilities include a swimming pool, watersports on the bay, and helicopter service to and from Colombo.


Watersports including windsurfing, water skiing, jet scooters, banana boat rides, and diving are offered by the PADI certified Lanka Sportreizen Centre just a short stroll along the beach. Experience the cultural heritage and inland rural landscape of the North with its village homes, Hindu kovils, paddy fields and lagoons where bird watching is rewarding. Spend a morning’s excursion in Batticaloa which is about half an hour south of Pasikudah. Visit the 17C Dutch Fort in Batticaloa which is bordered on two sides by a lagoon and the Indian Ocean; the Batticaloa Market on Lady Manning Drive where villagers sell their home grown vegetables and fruits; shop for village handicrafts such as colourful handloom sarongs, bags, baskets and hats made from the Palmyrah palm. Visit a Hindu Kovil especially during a sacred pooja (religious service) which is accompanied by chanting and drumming. Discover the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa – a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is about 1.5 hours west of Pasikudah.
