General Overview

Tisara Villas offers an unhurried holiday with Nine villas, each with two bedrooms, are set within walled gardens. These eco-friendly villas with mud-coloured exterior walls, terracotta flooring, timber ceilings and clay-tiled roofs blend beautifully into landscaped gardens. Interiors are spacious and decorated with local fabrics and antiques. Rise to the sound of bird call, relax with a good book on your own private verandah, cool off in the swimming pool or have a rejuvenating massage at the Ayurveda centre while the chef prepares lunch in your villa. Tisara Villas is owned by a grandson of the late Martin Wickramasinghe, one of Sri Lanka’s best-loved authors and folk heroes who hails from the village of Koggala.


There are nine spacious villas of which one is a large family villa consisting of four bedrooms. All others consist of two a/c double bedrooms, living and dining area, extensive veranda opening out to a walled garden, and fully equipped kitchen with a mini-bar. The ensuite bathrooms are laid out with a bathtub and open air shower amidst a patch of tropical garden. The bedrooms are furnished with antique four poster beds and the dining rooms have six seater dining tables. Villa facilities also include a/c, overhead fans, solar powered hot water system, safe, and wifi internet. There is no TV or telephone.

Guests can order from the in-house menu and a chef will come and cook your meals in your own villa. Traditional Sri Lankan, western and fusion cuisine is served here prepared with fresh seafood and vegetables bought from the village. Fruit juices and a limited variety of alcoholic beverages are served here. Guests are welcome to bring their own liquor. Meals are served in clay pots in traditional style and laid out in your veranda or dining room. Relax on a sun bed by the swimming pool or go for a stroll along the garden paths. The meandering gardens here are exquisite with lotus filled ponds, giant ferns, flowering plants, and fruit trees that attract over 35 species of birds. In keeping with their eco-friendly policies, for every single tree that had to be cut down for creating this eco-retreat, 10 trees were planted in its place resulting in this beautiful green oasis. There is also a small Ayurveda centre offering relaxing massages. Upon request, personal Yoga instruction and guided meditation is arranged. Bicycles are available free-of-charge for guests to use.


Explore the village of Koggala and the Lake scattered with 9 small islands where rural life unfolds and nature reigns supreme. Fish eagles to monitor lizards share this habitat along with generations of villagers with a rich southern heritage. Some of the more interesting islands on Koggala Lake include Fish Eagle Island where hundreds of eagles come to nest at dusk; Madolduwa and Cinnamon Island where four village families process cinnamon into essential oils. En route, stop by at a boutique for a cup of tea, visit the village fair and several ancient temples in the vicinity. Visit the Koggala Folk Museum that provides an insight into Sri Lankan Folk culture. A 15-minute drive will take you to the historic city of Galle, with its Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site and a melting pot of cultural influences.
